Its time for Samsung foldable smartphones


Samsung will announce the details of the foldable smartphone later this year, and its mobile division chief told CNBC that there are rumors that the device is in use.

DJ Koh said that after a consumer survey conducted by Samsung showed that the phone had a market, it could "deliver on a foldable device."

In an interview with CNBC, Koh remained silent on the way the folding screen works, but adjusted the design of the upcoming smartphone, especially how Samsung tried to differentiate its experience from the tablet after the tablet was launched.

"You can use most of the use... in a collapsible state. But when you need to browse or see something, you may need to expand it. But even if it expands, it will be compared to a tablet. The device may sound similar to a traditional flip phone, which relies on a hinge to connect the two parts of the phone. But Samsung may focus on creating a curved actual screen. The Wall Street Journal reported in July that the upcoming foldable smartphone will use a single screen.

Koh hinted that more details of the device might be announced at the Samsung Developers Conference in San Francisco in November this year, but did not say when it will be fully released or when it will be available for sale. The mobile CEO acknowledged that although the development process was “complex,” the company had “nearly ended” it.

The move is because Samsung wants to revive its growth in the mobile sector, with sales in the second quarter of 2018 down 20% year-on-year. The Korean technology giant is facing high-end competition from Apple and Huawei. market. A foldable phone can distinguish it from its competitors and may allow it to charge a higher price for a unique device.

Koh also told CNBC that the company is changing its strategy in the mid-range smartphone market to adopt new technologies to create low-cost devices to attract more millennials.
