U1 is Apple's new chip, which allows its latest iPhone model (or any U1-equipped device) to detect its exact location relative to other devices in the same room. U1 joins other "dedicated" chips developed by Apple, such as the updated H1 chip in W1 and AirPods. Each chip has its own dedicated task to help Apple devices work more efficiently and integrate better.
Pocket-lint has an interpreter on the U1 chip here, but all in all: it uses a technology called ultra-wideband (UWB) to determine location and spatial awareness. iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro currently use this system to enhance Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity and AirDrop.
Some users have complained about how the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro equipped with U1 track location data even after turning off location services. Apple has now released a software update for iOS 13.3.1 to allow users to disable the U1 chip. In addition, according to 9to5Mac, UWB technology is currently not allowed in some countries. Therefore, users can now permanently turn off the U1 chip.
To ensure your iPhone no longer tracks your location, please do the following:
Update your iPhone 11 or iPhone 11 Pro to iOS 13.3.1.
Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
Scroll to and click Privacy.
Click Location Services.
Select system services from the list
Go to the "Network and Wireless" option and disable it.
Confirm that the U1 chip is disabled.
