I just want to say that I like the idea of folding a mobile/tablet device. When Microsoft introduced the fun but abortive concept device, I was a courier fanatic, and I was all because of the unique shape and the curved things. But the real shot that Samsung took for the first time on a folding device is inexplicable and may have died on arrival. I want to congratulate the company for trying something new, but this takes more time in the oven.
Of course, I didn't use it, so this is just my uninformed opinion (inspired by you). But this device is really weird and not very good. This is a very thick phone with a large border around the small screen that can open a small tablet. No one wants that!
Think about it. Why do you want a big screen?
If it works for the media, like most people, consider that almost all media are now widescreen, landscape (YouTube and Netflix) or vertical (Instagram and Facebook). You can switch between these views very easily. Now consider that due to the basic geometry, the "large" screen inside this device may not display more media (if any) than the previous screen!
It's like putting two tall screens together. You end up being only twice as wide, but that's the result of putting your phone aside. What you get on the big screen is a lot of mailboxes or window frames. Oh, maybe about three-quarters of an inch thick and half a pound of weight. This thing will become a beast.
Advanced users may also need a big screen to increase productivity: email and document processing are great on large devices like the Galaxy Note. Here, the folding tablet has the opportunity to excel (may say so). You can simply use more words and charts and controls there. Big! However, if the phone is for advanced users, why would they open the small screen in front even if the user wants to get in touch with the phone? For quick reply or dismissal notice, maybe, but who really wants that? This experience is always not as good as the design experience of the entire device.
I would welcome a mobile phone that is just a book-style big screen. I don't think it would be cumbersome to open it when you want to use it. Many people with giant mobile phones will keep a book-like cover on their devices anyway! Being able to use these square inches for a display instead of a credit card slot or something would be great.
There are also creative ways to use the screen: the left and right halves are different applications; the top half is composed, the bottom half is the keyboard; the left half is the inbox, the right half is the content; the top half is the media, the bottom is the control And comments. Those appearing in my mind are faster than I am typing.
On the other hand, I can't think of any way that a "front" display can meaningfully interact or enhance meaningfully with a secondary (or primary?) display that will never be visible at the same time. It is assumed that you will be using one of them at any given time, which means that you are virtually unable to use the full functionality of the device.
Do you know what will be cool? Devices like this also use the border display we see on existing Galaxy devices. How cool is it to turn your phone off like a book, but there is an always-on notification strip (or two!) on your lips that tells you about the battery, information, etc? Maybe if you click once the device will automatically pop up the physics! This will be amazing! And Samsung is definitely the company I said will succeed.
It’s not only because I don’t like the equipment they design, but because I think the inevitable failure of the phone will cool the industry’s ambitions for this unique device. But that is wrong! People want cool new things. But they also want them to make sense.
I am looking forward to how this technology works, and I fully hope to have a folding phone in the next few years. But this first device seems to me to be a major mistake and will frustrate that flexible future rather than push it.
