Google's Pixel 3 show came earlier this week, bringing us closer to the end of the new flagship season. For Samsung, the past few months have revolved around Galaxy Note 9, but the company has saved something special for its next-generation mid-range devices. A few weeks ago, Samsung may have announced the launch of the Galaxy A7 mid-range phone with three rear cameras. But today, the world's first quad-core camera smartphone, the Galaxy A9, performs better.
Usually I will laugh at this transparent marketing strategy, but the whole package actually makes sense. Samsung called the A9 a mobile phone optimized for the Instagram generation, and it seems that the real idea has been incorporated into the target group (and what is not). The eight-core Snapdragon 660 processor is good enough - equivalent to a mid-range course - but 6GB of RAM should help keep performance stable. 128GB of storage is a more interesting number. This is plenty of room for all your Gen Z apps, selfies and music. More importantly, if you block all of this in some way, the microSD card will give you up to 512GB of space.
Those late-night YouTube sessions have a large, bright 6.3-inch display, and an average battery capacity of over 3,800 mAh means that the A9 is expected to stay alive through the TED conversation playlist until the next morning your alarm sounds. The new A9 has several very gorgeous but very tasteful finishes. There are boring blacks and two bold, bright pink and blue options. They have a gradient, a bit like Huawei's Twilight color scheme, making pink and blue both light and eye-catching. The A9 is thin and light, and although its vibrant color is the most attractive and memorable aspect of its design, the standard square with rounded corners is nothing to be awkward if it feels uncomfortable.
All of the above should be enough to sell mid-range people on the A9, but we can't ignore this is the world's first quad-core camera phone. Each of the four shots has a difference. The main camera, if there is such a thing, is a 24 megapixel thing, while the other lens is a simple 5 megapixel sensor that captures the depth information of the forced bokeh mode. Then you get a 10 megapixel telephoto camera with up to 2x optical zoom as its unique feature, and finally an 8 megapixel ultra-wide lens with a 120 degree field of view (and a slight fisheye effect). Oh, there is a 24 megapixel front camera that can satisfy any particularly demanding self-timer and queen.
The only real reason to put five cameras on your phone is because you can, and claim to be "world first," which is the gold of the marketing team. Still, perhaps the "Instagram generation" will actually take advantage of all these different lenses, in which case it's not just a spin, it's also valuable to users. Of course, more cameras don't automatically mean a better experience - LG's new V40 ThinQ is a good case study - just a few days ago, Google launched a pair of expensive flagship products and an independent master camera. Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL are still very powerful shooters, thanks to Google's software expertise. The Samsung representative acknowledged that there are several phones that can do a lot of things with software, and the A9's purpose is to rely on the variety of premium old-fashioned hardware, even if it's not more. Just stinging around the viewfinder, I can't call it the boundary between A9 in practicality and fancy.
For mid-range smartphones, the A9 was still quite expensive when it was launched in the UK in November, at a price of £549 (about $724) (the US potential version has not yet been released). This is the mid-range now with a new wave of about $1,000 in the 2018 flagship. As always, you can't help but look at the direction of OnePlus. The OnePlus 6, which is about to be robbed by the upcoming 6T, may not have the world's first four-in-one camera, but it is a great flagship product, starting at £469, which is cheaper than the A9.
If the price is the main consideration, then a few weeks ago there will always be a new £309 (worth $407) Galaxy A7 announcement. Its blue and gold options are not as popular as the A9, and there are other compromises. For example, the A7's screen is slightly smaller and the core specifications are slightly lower. However, if you can live without a 10MP telephoto lens with up to 2x optical zoom, everything else in the camera department is the same. And in order not to have the world's first quad-core camera phone, you can save yourself hundreds.
