Apple's iPhone X broke the price barrier of a $1,000 smartphone. Now, Samsung's new Galaxy Note device, which will be released this week, will join the $1,000 mobile phone club.
This raises an inevitable question: Is this new phone worth the money?
After a week of testing, my conclusion is that you may not have to. Galaxy Note9 is a luxury gadget designed for advanced users who need ultra-high-speed phones with large screens and excessive software features, for example, if connected to a monitor, they can be converted to a personal computer.
But if you can live without these advanced features, there are many good Android phones that cost hundreds of dollars. Although the Galaxy Note9 is an impressive technology with a huge 6.4-inch screen, excellent battery life and excellent camera, I will lead most Samsung fans to the Galaxy S9, a brother of about $700. This is a full-featured multitasking device.
Here are my main thoughts on the notable features of Note9, such as its innovative desktop mode, long battery life and improved digital stylus.
At least conceptually, the most interesting feature of the Galaxy Note9 is what Samsung calls DeX. DeX turns smartphones into personal computers.
To make settings, you can connect your phone to the monitor via a video cable and an adapter plugged into the phone's USB port. The phone will automatically detect the connected external screen and switch the software system to a Windows-like software system.
From there, you can control the "computer" using your phone's touch screen or a separate wireless keyboard or mouse. You can launch applications and files and process windows as you would on the desktop.
I am amazed at how good this pseudo-desktop system is, but it is awkward to control the desktop interface with the touchscreen buttons on the phone. I think most people want to use DeX with a normal keyboard and mouse.
And I admit that I don't know how this setting fits into someone's lifestyle. Why bring a smartphone to a workstation with a monitor, keyboard and mouse - and leave the back accessories behind, using only a smartphone - instead of simply carrying a full laptop? Currently, this feature is not necessary, if not impractical.
Suzanne De Silva, director of product strategy at Samsung, said she envisions people using DeX for a variety of tasks that take advantage of a large number of second screens, such as online shopping or singing karaoke on a television set.
“You can get these best experiences on your mobile phone and unlock the power of dual screens,” she said.
One of the appealing qualities of Note9 is its excellent battery life. Within a week of my test equipment - including using it to take photos, send emails and texts, use social media apps and play games - it has a longer battery life than any smartphone I use. Usually, after one day of use, I still have at least 30% of the remaining battery time. Most phones I tested always need to be charged at night.
However, I don't have a deep impression of the physical durability of this phone. When I walked gently in the park, Note9 fell from my coat pocket onto the concrete, leaving unsightly scratches on the two aluminum corners. The phone doesn't wear a case (my bad!), but this is not even the glass part of the device. Shouldn’t the $1,000 product be less refined?
