One more year Motorola extended its modular phone adventure

Motorola has already promoted its modular mobile phone adventure for a year, and the new device is compatible with its Mods extension specification. The reduction report has raised fears that this ambitious move will be stifled.


The new Mod-compatible Z3 Play was launched this week in Brazil - Motorola's rapid growth in the Latin American region - although the parent company Lenovo stated that it is still finalizing its equipment strategy in the UK.


Motorola launched the Mod program in the summer of 2016. Mod phones can be expanded with third-party add-on software, which is connected to the rear via magnets.


The Mods specification includes a high-throughput wireless data bus. A series of accessories including Polaroid thermal printers and even projectors have been developed. Lenovo has already invested in the development of promising Mod ideas through the accelerator program. Among the beneficiaries are the QWERTY keyboard Mod and the sphygmomanometer. At the same time, Moto Mod is expected to be the first 5G mobile phone that can be tested.


The advantage of users is that it can turn mobile phones into multi-functional consumer products without increasing the quality of mobile phones. The disadvantage is that similar Mods are more expensive than stand-alone equivalents such as battery packs.


Motorola promised that Mods will be compatible with its equipment for three years, which is a curse for the company because it requires Motorola to produce mobile phones with the same shape and size during the promise period (more or less). It has managed to make Z3 Play more slender, and now bundles Mods in different market segments.


Some high-profile modular mobile phone initiatives have become high-profile in recent years. Google's Project Ara aims to create a completely modular device, even if the CPU can be replaced, and the introduction of the LG internal expansion framework in G5 proved to be a closure of buyers; LG resumed its traditional appearance in the second year.


But Mods does allow manufacturers to create discontiguous SKUs for different market segments by bundling specific Mods and devices together (for example, to provide gamers with a bundle that includes the Gamepad console Mod).
